Artist Research - Richard Wentworth
Richard Wentworth (born 1947) is a British artist, curator and teacher. His work, encircling the notion of objects and their use as part of our day-to-day experiences, has altered the traditional definition of sculpture as well as photography. By transforming and manipulating objects into works of art, Wentworth subverts their original function and extends our understanding of them, by contrasting conventions and finding new purposes. One of his most famous pieces is of a wellington boot acting as a doorstop.
This theme throughout his work goes by the name of 'Making do and getting'. The theme focuses largely on the creativity involved with the production and takes pressure off the quality of the photography involved. Many of the pictures within the theme, by Richard Wentworth are arguably poorly photographed. Some of the photos are out of focus and others lacking composition. However, as this is present throughout all of his productions, it is made obvious that this is done purposely, emphasising the creativity of the theme.
