Stephanie Jung Emulation

Stephanie Jung Emulation

Stephanie Jung is an photographer who works within the theme of environment. To create her images she photographs a chosen locations with a digital camera from different angles. She then imports the images into photoshop and combines them to create a glitch like effect. Within photoshop she uses a variety of tools to blend the images and supply the glitch effect. To do this she varies the opacity of the various layers while also using effects such as multiply and screen as a method of blending the images.

Time Warp Glitch Effect

Time Warp Glitch Effect

When researching into environment, I came across various effects which allowed you to contrast genre conventions and display images in a different way then normally seen. One off theses effects was the glitch/distortion effect. Looking at the effect I liked how you could present the image in an individual but blurred vision, while still incorporating key elements in photographic production, such as composition and framing. I did further research into the effect and came across a phone app which allowed you to supply a glitch effect unique to others. The app was called 'Time Warp' and it distorted whatever subject I was photographing in a different way every time. After experimenting with the app I found that it worked best when close up on a subject. I photographed my own face using the app and it supplied various distorted outcomes, some better than others. Once I had these outcomes I uploaded them into photoshop as I felt there was still room for improvement. Here I added a red overlay and altered the image using tools such as the colour balance and the levels.

With this only covering the theme of glitch and distortion very slightly, I would like to delve further into the library of effects that can be supplied by this genre. I will also look into some famous artist productions and try and emulate their techniques in the future.

Richard Wentworth Emulation

Richard Wentworth

Emulation

During my analysis of the photographer, Richard Wentworth, I was inspired by his theme of 'Making do and Getting by'. The theme explored the use of every day objects in ways in which would never normally be associated. For example: A wellington boot as a door stop.

The theme focuses largely on the creativity involved with the production and takes pressure off the quality of the photography involved. I took this into account when producing the emulations and made sure that I followed the theme as closely as I could. I didn't want to incorporate any ideas which had already been executed by Richard Wentworth, in my emulation. Instead I brainstormed my own ideas following his style and I feel I was successful.

While strictly following Richard Wentworth's style of production in this task, I did slightly contrast his methods. Richard Wentworth has stuck to analogue photography throughout the theme, however I felt I'd be able to create some outcomes of higher quality using a digital camera. Looking back at my outcomes I am happy I made this deciscion.

Environmental Pinterest Board

Environmental Pinterest Board

To begin this component of photography, I wanted to look at the various possibilities of production within our given genre. With our given genre being 'Environment' I knew there would be a wide range of possible avenues to explore. To gather an overall idea to what production styles were I decided to produce a storyboard on Pinterest. I began by looking at images following the literal meaning of 'Environmental Photography', before exploring more complex areas such as: Glitchy effects, the appeal of emotion and colour transitions.
